Welcome to Science for Southern Colorado!

Science for Southern Colorado is an initiative to teach science in the areas of geoscience and chemistry to science teachers in the Southern Colorado region.

The Science for Southern Colorado initiative is divided into a series of modules covering various aspects of science involving both geoscience and chemistry.  These module have been completed over the last few months.

Module 1: The Big and Small Picture

Topics:

  • Plate Tectonics & Continental Drift
  • Minerals (stuff of the rocks around us)
  • Igneous Rocks (rocks born of fire)
 

Module 1: Using Discrepant Events to Help Teach Chemistry

Description: Review and learn some important concepts in chemistry through the use of discrepant events. Includes a discussion of the pedagogical use of discrepant events.

     

Module 2: Earth's Surface World

Topics:

  • Surface Processes (formation of sedimentary rocks)
  • The Earth's Surface (topography - reading maps and using compasses)
  • Landforms (Sand Dunes)
 

Module 2: Using Household Materials to Help Teach Chemistry

Description: See how common materials can be used safely to teach many important topics in chemistry.

     

Module 3: Deep Earth

Topics:

  • Metamorphic Rocks
  • Structural Geology and Mountains
  • Geologic Time Scale
 

Module 3: Hot Topics in Chemistry

Description: Learn about some of the most important topics in chemistry by examining cutting-edge issues.

     

Module 4: Comprehensive Field Trip
